Assent

A child's affirmative agreement to participate in research; required in addition to parental permission when appropriate.

Under Subpart D of 45 CFR 46, when research involves children, the IRB must determine whether assent is required and whether parental permission of one or both parents is needed.

Assent must be sought from children who are capable of providing it, based on age, maturity, and psychological state. Mere failure to object is not assent.
