Vulnerable Populations

Groups of research subjects who require additional protections because they may have limited ability to give voluntary informed consent or be at increased risk.

Vulnerable populations include pregnant women and neonates (Subpart B), prisoners (Subpart C), and children (Subpart D), as well as individuals with cognitive impairment, employees, students, and economically or educationally disadvantaged persons.

IRBs must apply additional safeguards when research involves these groups, including limits on permissible risk, additional consent or assent procedures, and sometimes a representative on the board.
