Also known as: community member, non-affiliated member

An IRB member with no other ties to the institution operating the IRB, intended to bring an independent community perspective.

An unaffiliated member is not otherwise affiliated with the institution and is not part of the immediate family of someone who is. The unaffiliated member helps ensure the IRB considers community attitudes and reduces institutional conflict of interest.
