Legally Authorized Representative (LAR)

Participant Protections

Also known as: LAR, legally authorized representative

An individual authorized under applicable law to consent to participation in research on behalf of a prospective subject who cannot consent for themselves.

LAR authority is defined by state law and institutional policy. The IRB must confirm that the consent process appropriately involves the LAR and, where feasible, the subject's assent.
