Data Use Agreement (DUA)

Also known as: DUA, data use agreement

A contract between a covered entity and a recipient governing the use and disclosure of a HIPAA limited data set for research.

A DUA permits disclosure of a limited data set (PHI stripped of direct identifiers) when the recipient agrees to specified safeguards and use restrictions under 45 CFR 164.514(e).
