Coercion and Undue Influence

Participant Protections

Also known as: undue influence, coercion

Threats or excessive incentives that could compromise a subject's voluntary decision to participate in research.

Coercion is an overt or implicit threat of harm for non-participation. Undue influence occurs when an offer is excessive, unwarranted, or improper. IRBs evaluate consent processes, recruitment, and incentives to minimize both.
