Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)

A contract governing the transfer of tangible research materials (biospecimens, reagents, cell lines) between organizations.

MTAs address ownership, permitted use, publication, IP, liability, and return or destruction of materials. NIH publishes simple-letter and UBMTA templates that streamline academic transfers.
